Shape Up For Summer: No Treadmill Required

Gym-Free Workout Tips from Kim Watters, Fitness Manager of Red Mountain Resort

“Think back to the calisthenics from P.E. class,” says Kim Watters, fitness manager at Red Mountain Resort in St. George, Utah. “It turns out that P.E. teachers were on the right track. Full-body exercises like jumping jacks and push-ups are more effective and don’t require fancy gym equipment. I tell guests that the only thing they need is their body.”

Watters says there are several full-body moves that can be combined to maximize results, including sprints, jumping jacks, squats, lunges, mountain climbers and push-ups.

Here are some of Watters’ favorite at-home workouts for getting into shape this summer:

  • Warm up with a one-mile jog or run
  • Do 25 jumping jacks
  • Step back into 20 alternating lunges
  • Do 12 push-ups, then transition with a forward roll or side roll into sit-ups
  • Do as many sit-ups as possible in two minutes

“The key is to mix and match so the workout stays fun,” she says. “At Red Mountain, we created our Weekend Warrior package using the same mentality. The package combines an assortment of fun activities – like Tai Chi, Canyon View Yoga and morning hikes – for guests to try over the course of three days. Then we create a take-home guide for each guest based on their favorite workouts. The goal is to introduce at least one new activity to get them excited about getting fit.”
